About

Kyle Gillette is a director, actor, writer, performance theorist, theatre historian, and teacher.

Dr. Gillette earned his Ph.D. in Drama from Stanford University in 2007. He joined Trinity University's faculty in 2008, where he teaches courses in performance, dramatic literature, and theatre history.

Before Trinity, Dr. Gillette taught as a postdoctoral teaching fellow in Stanford University's interdisciplinary Introduction to the Humanities program. Previously, he was a visiting Instructor in the MFA Acting program at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and for three summers helped teach and assistant direct a Shakespeare seminar at Oxford University. For four years, Dr. Gillette has run the California Actors Workshop in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dr. Gillette's articles on performance theory, perception, and dramatic literature have appeared in international journals including Modern Drama and Performance Research. A former research fellow with the Commonweal Institute, a progressive think tank in San Francisco, he now serves on its Board of Advisors.

As a theatre practitioner, Dr. Gillette has directed and acted both professionally and academically. Most recently, he directed Will Eno's Tragedy: a tragedy, Euripides' The Bacchae, Tom Stoppard's The Real Inspector Hound, and two Sam Shepard plays at Trinity, James Venhaus's Ugly People for the Overtime Theater, Allison Moore's Slasher for the AtticRep Theatre, and he co-created and performed in .US., a devised work directed by Rachel Joseph for AtticRep. He has also directed the work of Samuel Beckett, Peter Handke, Paula Vogel, and Karl Valentin, among others. Beginning in 2012, he will serve as the Artistic Director of the Overtime Theater.
